Living 4D Podcast Rewind: Nir Eyal
by James Phelps
Do you have a hard time not staring at your mobile phone constantly, even when you want to be focused on your family, your life and the things that really bring meaning to your life?
Most of us are struggling with distractions to some degree or another, the focus of this Living 4D Rewind conversation with tech entrepreneur, Stanford University educator and bestselling author Nir Eyal.
But it’s not the phone or electrical device that’s the real problem, Nir says.
“If you can’t sit down for dinner with your family for an hour, as I couldn’t because stuff was going on in my life, without looking at my phone, guess what? It wasn’t my phone! There was something I was escaping in my life that I was looking for relief from through this distraction.
“What I found was what started as a journey around tech distraction really became a much, much deeper, more nuanced exploration of all distraction. And it can come in many different forms.”
In addition to distractions, Nir talks about the ways the mental health of our children are affected by games and electronics due to a general lack of autonomy and feeling less competent due to constant testing.
Nir also discusses his work on his two landmark books, Hooked: How to Build Habit-Forming Products and Indistractible: How to Control Your Attention and Choose Your Life.
